The DaVinci Code

The motion picture version of Dan Brown's The DaVinci Code has created quite a buzz. As a work of fiction, Brown's blockbuster novel--it is the largest selling work of adult fiction on record--is an engrossing thriller with a fast-paced exotic mix of secret societies, mysterious assassins, intrigues involving famous historical figures and controversial institutions, all linked together with a delightful series of secret codes and riddles to figure out. It is, as one reviewer put it, "an orgy of symbolist and cryptologist delight."

Behind it all emerges the most astounding (and outrageous) "conspiracy theory" anyone could possibly imagine: that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married, had a daughter and ultimately resulted in the Merovingian kings of medieval France and whose bloodline continues until today.

For many the most disturbing thing about Brown's work is that even before the story begins it claims historical and factual accuracy for the stories main institutions and events. In the face of his rampant and deliberate twisting of commonly known historical facts, I kept wondering how Brown could have made such an obviously bogus assertion-one he knew was bound to be proven false.

I think this can be explained by a hidden code embedded in the story by the author himself, a code that tells the reader not to believe the fictitious story being spun.

A bit of background: Many of the details of Brown's story are based on a nonfiction work entitled Holy Blood, Holy Grail, written by Richard Leigh, Michael Baigent and Henry Lincoln. The three main characters of The Code are Robert Langdon, a religious symbolist, Sopie Neveu, a police cryptologist and granddaughter of the slain curator, and Leigh Teabing, the wise old professor upon whom they rely for answers. Throughout the story there is also the mysterious manipulator identified only as "The Teacher." It is this "Teacher" who, behind the scenes, is orchestrating assassinations and deceptions, works his nefarious scheme.

In the end, the villainous Teacher turns out to be the trusted counselor, Leigh Teabing. It is Teabing who is the ultimate trader within, the false plotter and deceiver. Why is this important? Notice the anagram Brown has embedded in the name of the ultimate source of treachery: Leigh (Richard Leigh!) Teabing (rearrange the letters and you get Baignet!).

Thus hidden in plain sight is an anagram for the authors of the reference source behind the story. Whether intended or not (and is it really possible to have been an accident?) there is no doubt the author's own hidden code warns the astute reader not to believe his story-it is all a work of fiction based on fiction and will deceive you if you believe it!

Neither the book nor the movie are the "be all and end all" of such stories. Yet the uninformed--an ever-growing segment of our world--will no doubt take much of this to heart. Our culture is marked by wide spread skepticism which results in enormous spiritual confusion. The deep spiritual hunger and restlessness of our day needs to be confronted by the clear and bold presentation of the unadulterated, undiluted gospel of the grace of God! That's our task. Why we are here!

By the way, just as Brown's work has hidden in plain view a code to warn readers not to believe his story is more than fiction, so the Bible has hidden in plain view codes telling its readers they can believe it and what it says about Jesus Christ.

Take just one illustration: Psalm 22:16. Crucifixion was not invented unto 700 years after this passage was written. There is absolutely no way these details could have been anticipated in advance except by Divine guidance that extended to the most subtle aspects of the recorded text.
